Signing up and payment
Can I pay as I go?
Yes you can. It’s £10 for the first class and £20 for each class thereafter. You can pay by card or cash on the day.
Can I get a refund if I miss a class?
You can’t get a refund but you can defer the date to another one within that month.
What do I need to bring with me?
For the trial class: a t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and shoes suitable for exercise. If you decide to sign up, our uniform costs £20.
Do I need experience?
No prior experience of martial arts is needed.
Is Wing Chun safe?
Wing Chun tends to be safer than more competition-based forms of martial arts. If there are any injuries (which is rare) then the staff at Citysport are first aid trained and have first aid equipment on hand.
Are you open on bank holidays?
The gym is closed for bank holidays.
Will it always be the same instructor?
Most of the time Sifu James Marsh will be running the classes. However if he is unavailable then another qualified instructor will run the class.
Are there beginner classes?
Classes consist of a mix of abilities. We don’t believe in running beginner-only classes as by training with more experienced trainees beginners will improve more quickly.
Are there qualifications or levels to work towards?
Each form consists of 3 gradings apart from Biu Ji which is only 2 gradings. Gradings are run during the last week of every month and with regular training it takes around 3 months to prepare for each exam. They cost £25 each.
Do you teach the dummy, pole, and knives?
We have decided not to include these in our syllabus. The main reason for this is that we believe that focusing on ‘ci sau’ sparring with a partner is the most effective way of applying our skills. The traditional equipment of Wing Chun doesn’t sufficiently contribute to this goal to justify its time and expense.
