Ip Man (葉問)
1 October 1893 – 2 December 1972
Ip Man was the most famous Wing Chun teacher in post-war China. This is partly due to him being able to flee the political troubles in mainland China at the time to British-owned Hong Kong, which was a more stable environment in which to teach. However his fame also came from his renown as a great teacher and the martial arts films in the 1970s of one of his students, Bruce Lee.
Wong Shun Leung (黃淳樑)
8 May 1935 – 28 January 1997
Wong Shun Leung was one of Ip Man’s most well-known students. He had a reputation for winning many ‘challenge fights” (‘beimo’) in Hong Kong and being a very proficient teacher. Some of his notable students include Gary Lam, Philipp Bayer, our Sigung Wan Kam Leung, and again Bruce Lee.
Wan Kam Leung (溫鑑良)
Wan Kam Leung was a close student and friend of Wong Shun Leung for more than twenty years. During that time he also met Bruce Lee via his teacher, and did a screen test for his movie “Game of Death” in 1973. Many years later in 1993 he became the only martial artist to be invited by the British Hong Kong government to teach the G4 branch of the police (VIP Protection Unit).
